Safe at Home
Four-year-old Alex ate two water beads during sensory play. His dad, Martin, called 911. The dispatcher, knowing we are the first-stop resource for accidental ingestions like this, connected Martin to us. We asked about Alex’s symptoms and explained that, when swallowed, it’s possible for water beads to expand and cause dangerous blockages in the stomach or intestines.
Since Alex wasn’t having difficulty breathing or abdominal pain, we didn’t think a trip to the hospital was necessary. We told Martin to keep an eye on him at home and explained what to watch for. Because it’s still possible to develop symptoms after a couple of days, we kept calling back to check in. Alex turned out to be fine and passed the water beads in his stool. Lucky for Martin (and Alex!), we prevented an unnecessary, stressful, and expensive hospital visit!
